Long term Commitment
Be prepared for a long term commitment.
The modification of ‘Peer Pressure’ and the changing of ‘Attitudes’ does not occur quickly. The U-Turn the Wheel program has been offered in Moss Vale since 1999 and each year we are pleased to report steady and slow progress in reducing the number of road deaths ad injuries among young people in our community.
Who’s Involved?
You will readily recognise that many organisations are involved in making this activity available to youth, including education authorities (to allow the young adults to attend during normal school hours) the police, road, transport, insurance and parents groups. The content of this U-Turn the Wheel program and its format take these groups into account.
Steering Group
The important first step toward a Youth Road Safety program in your area is to establish a steering group made up of relevant professionals adept in the knowledge of Road Safety and local issues.
The local Road Safety Officer is an excellent choice for a co-ordinator. From this team (Council, Police etc), you must appoint one person as a point of contact with the National ‘U-Turn the Wheel’ Steering Committee (your appointed co-ordinator would be a good choice). Your local Rotary club has the necessary organisational skills to run, assist in running, or to set up a “U-Turn the Wheel” activity - it is highly desirable that at least one Rotarian becomes a member or your Steering Group.
Teachers/Lecturers
There are a range of professional and volunteer groups who wish to participate in the program. Those actually participating as teachers/lecturers must be skilled and qualified in their field of knowledge and experienced presenters in order to maximise the learning outcomes for young people involved.
Evaluation Reports
You should report all details regarding evaluation of your program to our Commitee.
The following details might be included in your evaluation report and will help your Committee keep the web site up to date as well as assisting other groups with programs.
- Review the content of your program
- Compile copies of your Student Evaluation report within 20 working days of program end
- Report your difficulties, successes and suggestions to the National U-Turn the Wheel committee who will be able to use your experience to assist others in their success.
Not for Profit
As a community based, non-profit program, all monies donated or raised must be fed back into the program. At no point will participants be asked to contribute to the program. ‘U-Turn the Wheel’ programs are a service to the youth of a community and are not to be made a business venture or a profit making activity. These programs will provide an opportunity for 'Service above Self' for all who take part.
Educational Link
Recognise that in some locations "U-Turn the Wheel" is only a small supplementary part of the long formal education program on road safety conducted by school authorities . There is no intent in these activities to become involved with ‘in the car’ driver training.
Acknowledgements
On any literature, documentation, pamphlets, posters or media publicity, before, during and after any program, we ask that due and proper acknowledgment be given to ‘U-Turn the Wheel’ using the authorised Logo (see stylesheets).
Credit to the Rotary Club of Moss Vale and Wingecarribee Shire Council's Road Safety Program, as the initiators of "U-Turn the Wheel" program, would be appreciated but is not a condition of entry to the program. Sadly some organisations have copied the program without due acknowledgement of their source.
