ACHIEVEMENTS TO DATE

Moss Vale Rotary located in the Southern Highlands of NSW, Australia developed and ran its first U-Turn the Wheel program in 1999. Since then all year 11 students from 7 local high schools in the area (about 600 p.a.) attend the program each year.

Due to the success of the program it was quickly adopted by the neighbouring Rotary districts of Picton and Goulburn in the following year.

Frenchs Forest Rotary Club introduced ‘U-Turn the Wheel’ to Rotary District 9680 in Sydney in 2000. The program was quickly taken up by 9680 District with the formation of RYDA (Rotary Youth Driver Awareness) to handle the coordination of venue, speakers and schedules in that densely populated region.

Campbelltown, Shellharbour, Wollongong, Narrabri, Nowra and Dubbo, plus many other coastal and inland towns, have conducted U-Turn the Wheel programs in recent years.

We now estimate that a little more that 15,000 young drivers have been through the U-Turn the Wheel program in New South Wales.

Interstate enquires have been received from Queensland and Victoria in Australia. Information about the program has also been supplied to the U.S.A., Germany, U.K. and New Zealand.

Continuing to Improve

Over the years in which our U-Turn the Wheel Program has been offered in Moss Vale we have seen a steady decline in casualty figures in our area. U-Turn the Wheel can make a difference to saving the lives of young people in YOUR community. We encourage you to participate.

The program has been modified several times since 1999, to accept suggestions from many sources, including the input from the students and lecturers, reviews of the evaluation reports, the education and motoring authorities and the police.

We now recognise that program updates will be a continuing task as knowledge and statistics becomes more refined. A vital part of our program is to learn from the experiences of all who take part and this is why we value your input.
